Medium Photo series & video

Everyone is familiar with the phenomenon of ‘pocket dialling’. In this photo series I collected its visual counterpart. From my phone I retrieved all (42) photos I ever took by accident that show an unrecognisable image. They are chance impressions, captured without conscious intention, that function as a kind of ‘digital readymades’. Their randomness and abstraction elevate them into autonomous images. I arranged the photos along an ascending colour scale, creating a sense of order in what was originally arbitrary. Alongside the photo series, this work also includes a video with the sloshing rhythm of my phone in what is presumably my coat pocket. Together the works reveal the subtle beauty of chance: images that, had you set out to make them deliberately, you could never have devised.
