In a vast and hushed landscape stand a table and a bench. I come walking up with an old-fashioned bingo cage. As a child I often visited the bingo with my mother and grandmother, drawn by the conviviality and the chance to win — often useless — prizes. In this video that memory is evoked anew, but without social context or chance of winning. One by one all the numbers are drawn from the cage and read aloud, because in this lonely emptiness no one calls out ‘bingo’ in between. The ritual unfolds without aim or resolution. What remains is the gesture itself: the turning of the cage, the falling of the balls, the reading of the numbers and the slow passing of time. Thus the act becomes a quiet meditation on a nostalgic childhood memory.
