Medium Photo series, object & video

Hair is a peculiar thing. We run our fingers through the hair of our loved ones, style it, or shave it off. Hair was the inspiration for the series ‘The beauty of hair’. For ten weeks I collected, every week, the ‘dirty’ hairs left behind in my brush and formed them into compositions, which I photographed and printed life-size. In the photos the fragile material takes on an unexpected aesthetic quality. I also made ‘Hairy briefs’: a work that shows the hair we are most ashamed of — pubic hair. What usually stays hidden, I gave a prominent place here. The object examines, with humour, the tension between shame and beauty and questions cultural ideals of beauty. In the video ‘Down the drain’ the viewer follows five of my long, dark hairs at the foot of the sink drain. An everyday and somewhat distasteful subject takes on a certain allure. The movement of the water and the resistance of the hairs invite the viewer to keep watching, until the last hair too has disappeared.
