My Mother’s Mothers/

My Mother’s Mothers shows a layered portrait in which I paste photos of my deceased mother, grandmother and great-grandmother layer by layer over my own face. Image after image, their faces slide over mine as I merge them and shape them to the contours of my face. Thus a process emerges in which past and present touch and overlap. The work examines how identity forms and reveals itself, and how, through stacked DNA, we resemble our ancestors both inwardly and outwardly. Each face carries traces of the previous generation, like a passed-on imprint in which past and present come together in a new image.
