Medium Performance & photo

In the gallery space I sit on the floor, my body completely wrapped in a black, crocheted cocoon. Through the open structure of the crochet, my contours are still faintly visible. I take hold of the loose thread at the end and begin to pull. As I unravel the crochet, I wind the yarn into a ball that gradually grows larger. The process takes almost an hour and is demanding for my body and hands. The work stems from a childhood memory in which my (now deceased) mother and I would unravel knitted pieces and wind them into balls, to later make something new from them. With this work I return to that origin, just as the material returns to its base. I made the accompanying photo prior to the performance; it portrays the making process and the nostalgia behind the work.
