Rosary/

In earlier times we placed our trust in the Lord and prayed for a long and happy life. Nowadays we place our trust in science. Our daily prayer we have traded for pills that we faithfully take. They are the new beads on our rosary. The most-swallowed medicine — diclofenac — has become our ‘Hail Mary’. The Lord’s Prayer, with its mysteries of faith, also has new beads: folic acid for the Joyful Mystery, Prozac for the Sorrowful Mystery, MDMA for the Glorious Mystery, vitamin D for the Mystery of Light, and Viagra for the adoration of the Father. A modern ritual of swallowing, suffering, longing and belief in recovery.
